Research shows us that when it comes to fertility, black women are struggling. A 2008 study published in the US National Library of Medicine found that 48% of black women reported infertility, while only 31% of white women did. The often sub-par medical care that black women receive lead to mismanagement of conditions like endometriosis that can cause infertility. In addition to healthcare issues and increased infertility rates, women of color also have less access to fertility treatment. The Department of Health and Human Services shows that just 8% of black women have received fertility care. As a woman of color who has heard my community’s plight, I want to make a change.
