How Your Thyroid Affects Your Fertility

Many things affect your reproductive health including medical conditions like PCOS, lifestyle factors like smoking, environmental pollutants, and sometimes, just plain bad luck. Something that isn’t discussed as often, but can also affect your fertility is your thyroid.

Your thyroid gland is a tiny organ at the front of your neck that produces hormones to control many essential bodily functions. When your thyroid stops working correctly, it wreaks havoc on your entire body. While thyroid issues are usually associated with metabolic changes, these hormone imbalances can also affect your fertility.

Dr. Collin Smikle, Medical Director at Laurel Fertility Care, recently broke down how the thyroid gland can affect fertility, optimal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, and more.

Thyroid Q & A With Laurel Fertility

Q: What Is The Ideal TSH Level For Fertility?

A: In general, a normal range for TSH levels is around 3 to 3.5. If you’re trying to get pregnant or are looking at managing your thyroid hormones during pregnancy, you want a level between 1 and 2.4. Low levels can mean you may have a hyperactive thyroid that we must address. High levels mean your thyroid activity is low.

Both affect the fetus as it develops, and both need to be managed because of the consequences it can have on a pregnancy. Low TSH levels can cause miscarriages, and high levels— especially further along in the pregnancy—can pass through the placenta and affect the fetus.

Q: Can Patients Manage Thyroid Issues With Diet And Supplementation?

A: Yes, they can manage some symptoms if they are what we call borderline. Someone who is hypothyroid can make dietary changes that will help. If it’s too high, where we see TSH levels over 5, it’s unlikely that diet changes will be sufficient. You’d need to take medicines that help support that shift.

Q: Are Thyroid Problems Becoming More Common?

A: It has become more of a common issue, and we see that many patients have thyroid levels of around 2.5 to 3.

Over the last five to six years, we have noticed that you can have a higher risk of miscarriage for patients in that higher range.

Organizations like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have begun to manage this actively. They have conducted research that showed that for those with a thyroid hormone between 1 and 2.4, the risk of miscarriage diminishes. That is the range that we try to keep patients in when they’re trying to get pregnant.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"I wish I could give [them] more stars and recognition for all they’ve done for my husband and I. I’ve had issues with fertility for years, I went to other fertility specialist who were not able to answer my biggest concerns and I wasn’t getting pregnant, until I decided to go to Laurel Fertility.
