Kyle and I never imagined that building our family would require equal parts grit, science, prayer, and spreadsheets, but here we are, doing exactly that. After a Stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis at 33 and a year of chemo, surgeries, radiation, and ongoing treatment to keep me in remission, pregnancy or further fertility treatments are no longer possible for me. Losing my fertility was one of the hardest parts of my diagnosis and crushed me. A constant through all of those ups and downs was my family. Kyle never missed a treatment, never let my hope dip lower than his own, and somehow still managed to make me laugh even when I was bald, exhausted, and wondering if we would ever get to the other side of it. We made it and now we’re fighting for the chance to complete our family and give our beautiful daughter, Edie, a sibling.

Edie’s babyhood was filled with love, but it was also hospital hallways, transplant teams, and more medical terms than any new parent should ever learn. Edie and I survived it, but I missed so many of the ordinary moments that make motherhood feel soft instead of sharp and sudden. Kyle, who stepped into our lives and instantly became the most devoted stepdad, has never had the chance to experience those early years and see baby Edie take her first wobbly steps. We want to do that together, as partners who have already weathered more than most couples do in a lifetime.

We have one embryo, one chance, and one extraordinary opportunity to grow our family. And miraculously, we have been matched with the most selfless, generous, and deeply spiritual gestational carrier, a woman who truly feels called by God to help us bring this baby into the world. She has opened her heart in a way we will never be able to repay, and her willingness to walk this path with us is a gift we will carry forever.

Surrogacy is beautiful, but it is also expensive in ways that stretch far beyond what most families can prepare for. Adding insult to injury, we have not yet recovered financially from Bridget’s illness and time out of work. We are raising funds because we believe so deeply in giving Edie a sibling, in giving Kyle the experience of fatherhood from the very beginning, and in giving our one embryo the chance to become the little epic soul we already know it will be. Thank you for loving us, cheering for us, laughing with us (at us?), and standing by us as we chase the dream of completing our family.
