Campaign Story

Welcome! For those who are new to our journey, we (Scott and Elisabeth) got married a couple of years ago and have been anxious to start a family ever since then. We both work full time and are based out of Washington, D.C., as Scott (and our dog – another story!) are active duty Marine Corps stationed at Marine Barracks Washington.

We knew our fertility journey had the potential to be a struggle given past medical history. After six months of trying to start our family naturally, we were referred to the Walter Reed fertility program. As expected, we were diagnosed with “unexplained infertility” in 2022 and began the first of six rounds of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) in April 2023. After all six rounds proved unsuccessful, we were forced to either consider the possibility of pursuing In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or begin looking into adoption. While IVF has generally better odds of success per cycle, it is a significantly more expensive procedure that can run upwards of $15k-$20k per cycle. IVF is NOT covered by military medical insurance, unfortunately, so that expense would be entirely out of pocket. With student loan payments still being a factor for the next several years, my (Elisabeth’s) biological clock rapidly ticking away, and the cost of living in Washington D.C. being so high, those dollar amounts for IVF and the time we have to save for them are simply unattainable – and thus by proxy, so is our dream of biologically becoming parents.
