Campaign Story

We want to start off by saying how much we appreciate everyone reading this, taking the time out of their day to try to help someone else is truly special.

My name is Rachel Higgins and my husbands name is Roy Higgins. We are both 30 years old and have known each other since we were 15 years old. We have both grown up near Houston, TX and we both attended Tomball High School where we met. We were just good friends in high school, and then a few years later when I was starting grad school, Roy came back into my life randomly, but at the perfect time. We both really grew up and changed and it was almost instantly that we knew this was something special and we were meant to be together. We have been together now for 7 years, happily married for 3 years.

We have both always known we wanted children. Roy is a special education teacher and has such a passion and a special talent for kids. I babysat and nannied for years my whole teenage and young adult life up until becoming a Registered Dietitian in my professional life. Taking care of children has always been so natural to me, and I was so good at loving on everyone else’s children. Little did we know that this would be our situation years down the line.

Roy was left at a hospital as a newborn by his birth mother. He was in the foster care system for years, shuttled from home to home. He was then adopted by his now family, and they love him very much. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes as an adolescent and unfortunately did not have the proper care, support, or education on the autoimmune disease as a whole. His blood sugars were uncontrolled for many years leading to detrimental affects on his body now. It was true fate that we were brought back together, since I am a Registered Dietitian and have great knowledge of the disease and the management. His health and blood sugars are in great control now, but the damage has been done. He now has a complication that does not allow us to get pregnant naturally. We have tried many things and been to many doctors and have landed with a great fertility doctor now and we have a great, but scary plan. We never thought IVF would be our future, but here we are. My workup has thankfully come back fully healthy and normal. Roy will have to get an extra step done with a reproductive urologist and then we proceed with the full IVF process.

We are extremely hopeful, but have no clue how this is going to ever be paid for. We are in so much debt already, that we are working so hard to pay back. We have a 2 year old German Shepherd as our current baby, as we long for a child so badly. The bottom line is, Roy does not know a single blood related relative, and I will go to the ends of the earth to have biological children and make both of our dreams come true.
