Campaign Story

Hi, we’re Shawn & Kara and we’re on a journey to become parents. Kara has PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), which is one of the most common causes of infertility. Due to the PCOS, Kara does not ovulate at all. After attempting to regulate Kara’s ovulation with medicine & that being unsuccessful we were referred to a fertility specialist. With the fertility specialist 5 IUI cycles were attempted.

Our first full round of IUI was unsuccessful. Rounds 2-5 were all cancelled due to being unsafe to continue. 3 of those rounds were cancelled due to Kara overproducing which causes too high a risk of multiples. 2 cycles were cancelled due to developing cysts which is unsafe to continue as the cysts could increase in size and rupture, running the risk of infection. Our fertility clinic has recommended that we do IVF, as it is the safest option in our case.

Our journey so far has been costly, paying for medications, deductibles, copays, etc… IVF is far more costly than IUI cycles, as there are more medications, testing that isn’t covered by insurance, out of pocket costs, plus the travel and having to miss work. We have found a clinic that is more affordable than most, CNY in New York. Even with traveling, the cost in total is significantly less than the clinic in our state.

We are at a standstill now since finding out that our next option is IVF. We are asking for help in funding this so that we can become the parents we dream to be.
