Partner Spotlight: The Guidance Agency

The Gift of Parenthood organization and its partners provide fertility grants to future parents across the U.S. up to four times per year. The carefully selected applicants receive financial assistance towards their fertility treatments. Without partners like The Guidance Agency, our grant cycles would simply not be possible. The Guidance Agency supported the 2021 Christmas Gift Of A Lifetime Grant, and we would like to share some information about what makes them unique.

The Gestational Surrogacy Process At The Guidance Agency

The Guidance Agency is a woman-owned egg donation and surrogacy agency that connects, counsels, and guides families searching for egg donors and surrogates. Their experience, expertise, and handpicked network of surrogates and donors simplify what is often an arduous process. The caring and compassionate team is completed by a Surrogacy Coordinator, Match Coordinator,  Donor Coordinator, and agency President. Every team member knows the pain of infertility firsthand, allowing them to relate to every patient profoundly.

Why Surrogacy?

Many couples choose surrogacy after struggling with infertility. Infertility is a common condition that affects many men and women each year. Gestational surrogacy involves taking eggs from an intended mother and fertilizing them with the father’s sperm to create an embryo that is placed inside the gestational surrogate. A gestational surrogate then carries and delivers the baby. Though surrogacy can be a complex legal process, gestational surrogacy is often simpler as there is no genetic cross-over.

The Guidance Agency FAQs

Q: What requirements does The Guidance Agency have for surrogates?

A: Surrogates must show proof of a prior healthy pregnancy and delivery. To verify this, surrogates must provide pregnancy and delivery medical records, a medical clearance letter from their OBGYN, and have proof of health history before matching. Our surrogates undergo a screening process where they complete a comprehensive medical workup, sonogram, testing for STIs, drugs, immunity, and hormones.

In addition to physical health requirements, surrogates must also have a healthy mental health history. Surrogates need to pass a psychological evaluation and cannot be on mental health medications. Surrogates may also have in-person group counseling with the IPs (intended parents). Psychological testing may be required of a surrogate’s spouse or partner as well.

Q: How long does surrogacy take?

An average surrogate journey takes about three months from the time of matching to the transfer procedure. Timing is dependent on the clinic’s scheduling, availability, and protocol.

Q: What clinics do you partner with?

We have worked with over 150 clinics in the U.S. and Canada. We can coordinate a surrogate journey with any facility that accepts third-party donors.

I think the most valuable thing about them as a company is that they make you feel like you are truly supported. When you speak with anyone from Guidance they are always warm and inviting and always so patient. It is not like working with a company but like you are a part of a family.
